ATV Driving Skills: Getting More Advanced

Sep. 12 2022 Blogs By Louisiana Power Sports

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some simple tips on driving ATVs safely and properly. From simple positioning and knowing your controls to knowing how to navigate particular types of terrain, there are several different areas you might be considering if you're learning how to drive an ATV.

At Louisiana Power Sports, we know that while some clients of our incredible ATVs and other vehicles are experienced drivers, others are renting or purchasing for the first time. That's why we put together this helpful guide! Check out part two below for more tips on getting the most out of your ATV driving experience -- today, we'll dig into a few more moderate or advanced concepts, as part one was mostly focused around beginner tips.

Driving Around Obstacles

On many ATV rides, you'll come across obstacles in the form of fallen logs, large rocks, or other blockages. It's important to know how to properly deal with these so that you don't cause any damage to your vehicle or injure yourself. Here are a few tips:

  • If an obstacle is too tall to go over, you'll have to go around it: The best way to do this is by driving at an angle -- try to approach the obstacle at a 45 degree angle if possible. This will give you more clearance and make it easier to get around.
  • If the obstacle is too wide to go around, you may have to back up and approach it from another angle: Always be sure to check behind you before backing up, as it's easy to lose track of obstacles when you can't see them.

Never try to go over an obstacle that is too high or too wide for your ATV. This could lead to tipping over or getting stuck, and neither are fun experiences.

Traversing Across Hills

We went over how to climb hills in part one of our series, but what about going across them if you're traversing? For starters, because you're on a hill and your weight won't be even, it's recommended that you lean toward the upper side of the hill. This will help keep your ATV more stable.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you want to avoid going too fast when traversing a hill -- if you do, you run the risk of tipping over. Slow and steady wins the race in this case!

Sharp Corners

As you get more advanced in your ATV driving skills, you'll likely find yourself on more challenging trails with sharper corners. When taking a sharp turn, always remember to slow down first -- the last thing you want is to lose control and go careening off the trail. Another helpful tip is to use your weight to your advantage: when making a turn, lean into the turn so that your vehicle follows the direction you want it to go.

With the right simple tips and some practice, you'll be a master of the trails in no time! Have any questions about ATV driving or about renting or purchasing an ATV from Louisiana Power Sports? We're always happy to help. Simply contact us at your nearest convenience.
