ATV Theft Prevention: Storage and Lock Selection

May. 9 2023 Blogs By Louisiana Power Sports

No one wants to deal with theft risks or issues for any vehicle, and this includes off-road vehicles like ATVs, Can-Ams and others in this realm. Luckily, just like with any car, there are several basic steps you can take to avoid any major risks of theft for your ATV, whether on your own property or when out on a given trip.

At Louisiana Power Sports, we're happy to offer a wide range of new and pre-owned ATVs, Can-Ams, UTVs and other off-road vehicles for clients around Shreveport. In this two-part blog series, we'll go over several basic tips we offer our clients on how to steer clear of ATV theft risks at all times.

Proper Storage When Not in Use

During all periods where you won't be using the ATV, one of the most crucial safety steps is proper storage. This means that your vehicle should always be stored in a locked garage or shed, with both locks and an alarm system if possible.

If these aren't available to you, then make sure to use a heavy-duty chain and padlock on the ATV and attach it to a solid object that's difficult to move, such as a tree. It's also important to remove the battery or otherwise disable your ATV when not in use so potential thieves won't be able to simply jumpstart it and make off with it.

Choosing the Ideal Lock

There are several ATV lock formats to consider, including:

  • Chain and lock: A heavy-duty, theft-resistant chain and padlock are the most popular device, providing reasonable security against any person who wishes to make off with your vehicle.
  • Disc lock: This is a U-shaped piece of metal that fits over the spokes on both wheels and locks in place. It's harder for thieves to use bolt cutters or otherwise remove this type of lock.
  • Ground anchor: This is a heavy-duty metal bracket that's bolted into concrete and then used for the ATV chain to wrap around. It's an ideal option if you plan on keeping your vehicle stored in one location for long periods of time.
  • Wheel lock: This is a small device that's easy to install and fits into the wheel, making it difficult for thieves to make off with your ATV.

Which of these you choose will depend on your specific needs and the type of ATV you have, so be sure to talk to our team at Louisiana Power Sports for further advice.
